Petrolatum is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons derived from crude oil. It is a colorless, odorless substance with a greasy texture and a long track record of safe use in the skincare industry for more than 100 years. Natural alternatives to petroleum jelly may be considered more environmentally friendly, but plant-based versions can cost up to ten times more. The decision is yours.

Petrolatum is widely used in beauty and personal care products and has a unique moisturizing ability unlike many other ointments and creams. It enhances lubricity and moisture-loss resistance in products such as lotions, creams, ointments, and hand cleaners.

As an excellent emollient, petrolatum helps to moisturize the skin and keep it soft and smooth. When applied, it forms a protective barrier that locks in existing moisture and prevents evaporation, helping to keep the skin hydrated and prevent dryness and flakiness. Keep in mind that Vaseline doesn’t actually moisturize the skin on its own but works as a highly effective occlusive agent. Its oil-based nature creates a hydrophobic barrier that reduces trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) and shields the skin from external irritants.

Petrolatum is additionally known for its wound-healing properties. When applied to minor cuts, burns, or scrapes, it can promote healing by forming a barrier that protects the wound from bacteria and other harmful substances.
