Sodium lactate is the sodium salt of naturally occurring L-lactic acid, produced by the fermentation of carbohydrates. It is a colorless liquid recognized as a safe additive by the European Commission under the designation E-325. As one of the main components of the skin’s natural moisturizing factor (NMF), sodium lactate plays a key role in maintaining hydration. Gentle and versatile, it suits all skin types and works well in both rinse-off and leave-on products.

Among commonly used low molecular weight humectants, it exhibits the highest water-holding capacity* and provides a superior plasticizing effect on the stratum corneum.
