Disodium cocoamphodiacetate is an amphoteric surfactant primarily used as a secondary cleanser in gentle and high-quality skin care formulations. It creates a soft, creamy foam that washes gently while keeping the skin’s natural moisture intact, leaving it feeling smooth and nourished.
At a 5% concentration, it is non-irritating to the eyes, and at 10%, it is gentle on the skin. Its exceptionally mild nature helps reduce the irritation often caused by anionic surfactants. It also contributes to thickening and works effectively in combination with sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), eliminating the need for additional sodium chloride in the final product. Furthermore, disodium cocoamphodiacetate enhances both the quality and quantity of foam, even in the presence of hard water, grease or oil. It offers versatility, being processable at low temperatures while remaining stable under heat up to 90 °C.
With broad pH stability (2–13) and compatibility with electrolyte solutions as well as anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants, it is well-suited for a wide range of personal care and household products. In both baby and adult non-irritating shampoos, it provides a pleasant feel to the hair and offers good wet and dry combing performance, often requiring minimal use of additional conditioning agents.
