Dipropylene glycol (DPG) is a blend of three isomers consisting of two propane units connected by an ether linkage. This structure results in a higher molecular weight and a thicker consistency compared to propylene glycol. DPG is less likely to cause skin irritation than some other glycols, making it a preferred ingredient in perfumes and body care products.
Primary applications include:
-
Perfumes and Fragrances: Functions as a carrier that dissolves fragrance components and acts as a fixative, slowing evaporation and prolonging the scent’s longevity
-
Deodorants and Body Sprays: Improves formulation stability and enhances compatibility with fragrance components
-
Color Cosmetics: Helps dissolve pigments for smooth, even application
-
Skin Lotions and Creams: Contributes to a soft, velvety skin feel and aids in the even dispersion of active ingredients
Compared to propylene glycol, DPG is used more selectively in applications where its lower volatility and longer-lasting effects offer a distinct advantage. It is considered safe for topical use but is not approved for ingestion or use in food products.
