D-Panthenol is the provitamin of D-Pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5). In the body, it is oxidized into its biologically active form. Humans require Vitamin B5 to synthesize Acetyl CoA, an essential mediator in many biochemical reactions that support the maintenance and repair of all cells. A deficiency of Vitamin B5 can lead to various dermatological disorders.
Panthenol absorbs into the upper skin layers and works its way deeper, where it provides the most benefit. It provides effective relief for dry skin, offering deep hydration and supporting the repair of cracked skin. Used regularly as part of a skincare routine, it can noticeably enhance skin texture and overall appearance.

A word of caution: when comparing panthenol prices on different websites, be aware that D,L-Panthenol is cheaper than D-Panthenol. The former is a racemic mixture of the D and L forms of panthenol. Since only D-Panthenol is converted into Vitamin B5 (while L-Panthenol is not), racemic DL-Panthenol has only half the physiological activity of pure D-Panthenol. This includes its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects. However, for non-physiological benefits such as moisturization, hair shine etc, D- and L-Panthenol are equally effective.
Due to the extremely high viscosity of pure D-Panthenol, the product is typically supplied as a 75% active solution in water.
