Benzalkonium chloride (BAC) is a keystone in antimicrobial formulations. Its outstanding properties make it the preferred choice for effective microbial control. So far, it is still one of the most widely used preservatives in ophthalmic formulations.

BAC is a highly cationic compound and, therefore, is not compatible with formulations containing anionic ingredients. Although it is aggressive in its supplied form and known to be highly toxic to aquatic organisms, its rapid degradation significantly reduces environmental risk.

Features:

  • Broad-spectrum efficacy against bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses

  • Active across a wide pH range (4–11)

  • High stability under varying temperature and pH conditions

  • Non-volatile and non-flammable

  • Cost-effective, requiring low concentrations for effective action

  • Strong surfactant properties

  • Soluble in both aqueous and oily systems

The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of BAC for most common Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, and molds are typically below 50 ppm (0.005%). However, a higher usage level is recommended to ensure effective bactericidal, antifungal activity.
