PEG 40 hydrogenated castor oil is a well established and widely used solubilizer in the cosmetic industry. It is an ingredient that helps small amounts of oils, such as fragrances, essential oils, and fat soluble vitamins, dissolve clearly into water or water alcohol blends. While emulsifiers create creamy, milky mixtures, solubilizers like this one produce clear solutions. For this reason, the ingredient is widely used across a broad spectrum of applications, including shower and bath products, hair fragrances, body mists, makeup and cleansing liquids, aftershaves, alcoholic preparations, and numerous other formulations.
The standard way to use it is to first blend the oil based ingredient with PEG 40 hydrogenated castor oil, and then add that premix to your water phase while stirring vigorously. This ensures a stable and uniform result. As a practical guideline, you typically need 2 to 8 times more solubilizer than the oil you want to dissolve. For instance, to solubilize 1 percent eucalyptus essential oil in water, you would use about 5 percent of this solubilizer. Lavender oil requires roughly 4 percent, while rose oil needs only about 3 percent. In many formulations, this ingredient proves more effective than Polysorbate 20 or Polysorbate 80, making it a preferred choice for formulators.
From a technical standpoint, this material offers excellent versatility. It is soluble in water, ethanol, propylene glycol, and glycerine, which means it integrates easily into a wide variety of product types. It can withstand processing temperatures up to 90 degrees Celsius and remains stable across a broad pH range of 3 to 10, giving you reliable performance even in challenging formulations.
