Sunflower oil is a natural emollient derived from sunflower seeds. It acts as a natural moisturizer by penetrating the skin, creating a barrier, and locking moisture inside. Due to its significant content of oleic and linoleic acids, it absorbs easily without leaving a heavy, greasy residue. This oil is highly recommended for formulations designed to treat dry, aged, or damaged skin. Its comedogenic index is often reported to range from 0 to 2, meaning it is unlikely to clog pores, making it suitable for acne-prone skin. Additionally, it is considered the second-best vegetable oil for its high vitamin E content, which helps prevent damage to skin cells from ultraviolet light. Sunflower oil serves as an ideal solvent and carrier for fat-soluble vitamin E, which is why the liquid concentrate usually comes as a mixture of 70% tocopherols and 30% oil.
The refined grade undergoes additional purification that removes odor and impurities, which also helps extend its shelf life. Nevertheless, it should still be used relatively quickly. The high concentration of unsaturated fatty acids in the oil’s molecular structure makes it highly vulnerable to heat, light, and air, leading to rapid degradation. Therefore, it must be stored in cool (ideally refrigerated), dark conditions, inside tightly closed, opaque containers.
