Isopropyl myristate

Isopropyl myristate or IPM is a commonly used emollient in cosmetics that enhances product texture and provides a pleasant skin feel. As an ester formed from isopropyl alcohol and myristic acid, it has a light, non-greasy texture that absorbs quickly without leaving a residue. It is ideal for use in moisturizers, lotions, and body oils, where it softens the skin and improves smoothness. Beyond its surface effects, it helps reduce transepidermal water loss, supporting skin hydration.

This ingredient also enhances the sensory qualities of formulations by minimizing the sticky sensation often caused by glycerin allowing for light and non-sticky textures. It is effective in makeup removers due to its ability to dissolve oils and impurities. In hair care products, it reduces dryness, improves smoothness, does not weigh hair down, and aids in easier combing.

Isopropyl myristate is also used in perfumes as a fragrance carrier, promoting even aroma release and extending the scent’s longevity on the skin. In formulations with high active ingredient content, it improves stability and blends well with oils, fats, and waxes, resulting in homogeneous and easy-to-apply products.
