Niacinamide, also referred to as Nicotinamide, or vitamin B3, is an essential water-soluble nutrient found in many foods. It is the amide derivative of nicotinic acid (niacin) and shares the same vitamin activity. Niacinamide is a precursor to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and its phosphorylated derivative, NADP, which are two major players in metabolism that act as electron carriers in numerous redox reactions. Reports have shown that topical nicotinamide significantly improves acne vulgaris by reducing acne lesions*. In addition, nicotinamide has shown a low risk of side effects and toxicity when taken orally at doses of up to 3 grams per day for periods of up to five years**.

Due to its known wide range of benefits, niacinamide is a popular skincare ingredient. It targets issues like hyperpigmentation caused by the overproduction of melanin, regulate sebum production, minimize fine lines and moisture loss. Additionally, it boasts anti-aging and anti-inflammatory effects by increasing ceramide levels, supporting a healthy and resilient skin barrier that can more effectively protect against environmental factors.

For niacinamide to be most effective, its pH should be in the range of 5.0 to 6.0. Combining AHAs (glycolic, lactic acid etc.) or BHAs (salicylic acid) with niacinamide can negatively affect the skin’s pH balance, deactivating the active ingredients and making them ineffective, as well as potentially irritating the skin.
