Pure synthetic allantoin is chemically identical to the compound naturally found in comfrey plant extracts. Its use in cosmetics highlights its safety, non-toxic properties, and excellent compatibility with other cosmetic ingredients. Allantoin is well-suited for most personal care formulations with a pH range of 4 to 8 for optimal stability. However, it can be tricky to dissolve in water because it dissolves very slowly at room temperature. It is also poorly soluble in alcohols such as ethanol, isopropanol, or propylene glycol, as well as in commonly used oils. Heating to 50 °C can speed up the dissolution process, and the addition of 5% glycerin can double its solubility in water.

A 50/50 betaine–water mixture can be used to prepare more concentrated allantoin solutions at room temperature, allowing concentrations of up to 1.4%.

Due to its beneficial properties, allantoin is widely used in various cosmetic products, including facial care, facial cleansers, body care, baby care, hand creams and lotions, shower and bath gels, after-shave lotions and creams, shampoos, conditioners, and more.

Key benefits:

  • Boosts skin renewal for a visibly fresher look by exfoliating dry and damaged skin cells
  • Soothes and calms inflammation caused by harsh active ingredients
  • Deeply hydrates to leave skin feeling soft, smooth, and radiant
