Glyceryl stearate SE is a solid wax, where “SE” stands for self-emulsifying. It consists mainly of monoglycerides of stearic and palmitic acids, with smaller amounts of di- and triglycerides, and includes added sodium or potassium stearate to provide self-emulsifying properties. This emulsifier works best as the primary agent, allowing oil and water to blend easily without the need for additional stabilizing additives. Formulations containing self-emulsifying glyceryl stearate may also form lamellar liquid crystalline phases that mimic the skin’s natural structure, enhancing moisturizing, protective, and repairing properties.

The ingredient is not compatible with acidic environments, and electrolytes may act as destabilizers, leading to phase separation. Because of this sensitivity, glyceryl stearate SE is recommended for use in neutral to slightly alkaline anionic systems with a pH range of 7–8. In formulations with high oil and low water content, a co-emulsifier may be required to achieve a stable emulsion.

Standard emulsification process:

  • Heat the water phase and the oil phase (with emulsifying wax) separately to 70–75 °C
  • Gradually add the oil phase to the water phase under high-shear mixing to form a stable, creamy emulsion
  • Allow the mixture to cool gradually while stirring gently
  • At lower temperatures, add any optional ingredients such as essential oils
  • Finish by incorporating a preservative to extend the product’s shelf life
